Seasonal Schools in Signal Processing
The Membership Board is delighted to introduce the Seasonal Schools in Signal Processing (S3P) Program in the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS). This program was established in 2010 as an outcome of the SPS Long Range Planning Retreat held during ICIP 2010 in Hong Kong. S3P seasonal schools are typically either summer schools or winter schools, and are geared towards providing graduate students, early stage researchers, and practitioners with background on selected topics in signal processing.
The primary objective for creating a seasonal school program is membership development for students with interests in signal processing. Students are the future of our Society. It is essential that we provide special membership development opportunities for this important group of members.
Additional objectives of the seasonal school program include the following:
- Building awareness of Signal Processing Society and technical committee activities.
- Building communities of Ph.D. students and educators in important signal processing research areas.
- Engaging local chapters in membership development and educational activities.
- Linking distinguished lecturers to relevant membership development activities.
- Providing hands-on tutorial sessions, where students can experiment with concepts and methods. The degree to which hands-on sessions are employed will in general depend on the seasonal school theme, and the objectives of the organizers.
- Evolution of high quality tutorial materials that can be disseminated online to the larger signal processing community.
Previous Seasonal Schools:
- The IEEE/ICE Summer School on Networked Embedded Systems (http://ice.aau.at/ss-2011/) was held from September 3 through September 7, 2011 in Klagenfurt, Austria. This was the first technically co-sponsored event under of the S3P Program.
- The IEEE SPS Summer School on 3D and High Definition/High Contrast Video Processing Systems (http://s3p3dvideo.ee.nthu.edu.tw/static?target=home) was held from July 4 through July 8, 2011 at National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan. This was the inaugural event under the officially launched S3P Program.
- The Summer School on Models for Embedded Signal Processing Systems (http://www.lorentzcenter.nl/lc/web/2010/427/info.php3?wsid=427) was held from Aug. 30 through Sep. 3, 2010 in the Lorentz Center, Leiden, The Netherlands. This was a pilot event for the S3P program.
