Proposals for 1998 MMSP Workshop V. Adjournment Ad. I Call to Order. The TC chair Tsuhan Chen welcomed the participants to the meeting, reviwed the Agenda and asked for additional agenda items. There were no additional items proposed. Ad. II Reports. A. Officers report. MMSP Workshop in Princeton, NY, June 23-25, 1997. In addition to the report in Appendix 1 of the Agenda it was stated that there were ~130 submitted and ~80 accepted papers for the WS. B. Subcommittees' reports. Bylaw and Membership (Subcommittee chaired by Yu Hen Hu) Report in Appendix 1 of the Agenda. Publication (Subcommittee chaired by K.J. Ray Liu) Report in Appendix 1 of the Agenda. Electronic Business (Subcommittee chaired by Reha Civanlar) Report in Appendix 1 of the Agenda. Ad. III. Unfinished business A. Approval of bylaw and procedure. The Bylaw Appendix of the Agenda was discussed and was unanimously approved. The TC will elect up to 8 new members per year. After having passed the transient phase, the committee should have a total of 32 members plus liaison members. B. Terms of initial members. A motion for emphasising volunteering was approved. C. Nominations for paper awards and other major awards. The TC can nominate for Society Award, Technical Achievements Award, Meritorious Service Award (Sep. 19), Best Paper Award (May 16), Young Author Best Paper Award. In general the principles for nominations to associated editor of transactions will be confidential and mainly decided by the chair. All other nominations will be nonconfidential. D. Proposals for ICASSP98 Tutorials. (Jenq-Neng Hwang). Currently there are plans for 3 tutorials before noon and 3 afternoon. Suggestions for tutorials are sent to Tutorials Chair Gary Bernard Boeing Corporation. A special scene for multimedia presentations are planned for ICASSP98. E. Article for SP magazine Special Series. There is a need for editorial type articles. It is suggested (S.Y. Kung) to write special columns on the spirit of multimedia eg. with 2/3 picture and 1/3 caption text. Ad. IV New Business. A. Nomination and election of new members. Is was suggested to have a subcommittee (chaired by S.Y. Kung) for membership of the TC. Nomination is open to all members of SPS and the TC is electing the members. It was also proposed that the nominator need to submit to SY a one paragraph write-up on behalf of nominee before SY forwards the case to the TC for confirmation or ballot. B. Proposals for 1998 MMSP Workshop and future workshops. A proposal for the 1998 MMSP Workshop has been received from prof. Antonio Ortega, IMSC at USC. The proposal of the place of the WS was approved unanimously. The WS will take place in June 1998. The date is to be determined. USC will bring a detailed proposal for the date and venue to the next TC meeting. There was a general discussion of the frequency of future WS and at what time of the year it should be placed. With respect to the frequency of the WS it was suggested to have it annually; biannually in US and sometimes in between in Europe or Asia; mixed annual in US where the WS is combined with TC IMDSP or SPEECH. There was a motion to postpone the decision on frequency to the TC MMSP meeting in 1998. This was approved. The preferred WS placement in time of the year was discussed. Suggestions was made on June, August or December although the latter month from some point of view is difficult. It is also necessary to take into consideration the schedules for ICASSP and ICIP. Ad. V. Adjournment. Future meetings: The next MMSP TC meeting will be held at the MMSP Workshop in Princeton, June 23-25. The exact date will be announced.
